After
a 30years long war for the liberation from the Ethiopic
domain, Eritrea becomes the 53rd African State in 1993
thanks to a popular referendum. Finally, the democratisation
process starts... it was supposed to lead to a future of
peace and development.
Unfortunately, due to a new and foolish war with Ethyopia once
again (1998 - 2000) the constitution and the multi-party system by
the means of democratic elections failed and the dictatorship
of
Isayas
Afeworki settled. He governs without any mandate at the moment and
with no limits by the Transitory National Assembly which very rarely
meets.
The critics against the presidential power became stronger during
May 2001 when 15 members of the Central Committee of PFDJ (former
ministres, ambassadors and generals) published an open letter in order
to request
some reforms and exhortating the full application of the constitution,
democratic elections, the abolition of the Special Court together with
many other reforms.

September, 18th 2001
|
This
is the day which marks the dictatorial turn of the Eritrean
Government. Eleven persons among those who signed the
open letter together with 18 journalists were arrested.
The Eritrean free
press
was banned. 2,000 students were closed in concentration
camps and some of them died. During the following 48 hours
the Italian Ambassador was expelled from he country because
he delivered to the Eritrean President a protest letter
on behalf of the United Europe since he was its official
spokesman.

VIOLATION
OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS
|
Eritrea
|
Amnesty
International, Human Right Watch, the International Red
Cross together with many other similar associations, denounc
the violation of the human rights in Eritrea. Arbitrary
imprisonments since 1991 (thousands of innocents including
political dissidents, journalists, religiuos, students
and whole families), prosecutions, tortures, isolations,
rapes and forces military service by means of roundups
and mass deportations to secret training camps even of
minors.

Italy

As
a consequence of what is happening in Eritrea nowadays,
in Italy there is an increase of the migration flow of
Eritreans seeking political asylum. Italy answers to such
requests with unsuited laws, forced repatriations, inadequate
receptions centres and no kind of aknowledgement of any
right despite the moral dept towards Eritrea, which was
the firstborn Italian colony.
Even if the diplomatic relationship between Italy and Eritrea are likely
good, the Eritrean dicatorial Government has now expelled the diplomatic
personnel, six Italian NGOs and refuses to give the Visa to the journalists
or peolple who expressed their own opinion concerning the violation
of the human rights in the country.
